Social media blog Mashable first reported the story that less than a day after the Lionel Messi official Facebook page went live, the Argentinean soccer star garnered 6.9 million Facebook fanss, or “likes.” At 1:16AM PST, Lionel Messi posted a Spanish greeting to fans with the translation: “Hola! Welcome to everyone. Thank you very much for the great number of messages that I have received. I am so excited! From now on we will be more closely connected through Facebook.”
By now, the Lionel Messi fan page has grown to include photos, video, links to favorite causes like UNICEF and the Leo Messi Foundation, and an inspirational biography. “No matter the titles, trophies and honors,” says Messi, “I will always be the boy who grew up in Rosario, Santa Fé, Argentina. It was there that I learned to walk just to be able to chase a dream.”
It’s possible, Mashable updated, that the overnight sensation of the Lionel Messi Facebook page could have resulted from a merge of several unofficial Facebook fan pages to his official pages, but this remains unclear as there is no public option in place on Facebook to make such a merge. As far as we can tell, it’s just a testament to the awe and admiration Lionel Messi commands every day.
